Sinamics S120 Overview

The Sinamics S120 is a modular drive system, offering you the best solution for your drive requirements in a broad range of applications.  Suitable for use with Torque, Synchronous, induction, linear and synchronous reluctance motors.

The most popular format is the Sinamics S120 Booksize with it's

  • Common DC Bus
  • Component Flexibility
  • Simple installation
  • Space Efficiency
  • Wide power range from 1 - 112kW
  • Straightforward commissioning

The modular approach allows you to configure the SINAMICS S120 to what you want it to be:

  • Vector System
  • Servo System
  • 2 axis Drive system (up to a 222 axis drive system)
  • Non Regen
  • Regen
  • Regen with power factor correction and harmonic reduction using an active line module

Benefits of the common DC Bus is power sharing between the motoring and generating axes to optimise your power usage. It is easy to set up a line regenerative system that captures braking energy and returns it to the power grid there is also less requirement for a braking resistor.

The side by side mounting of the booksize format not only gives you a compact system, but the common DC bus system only requires a single set of line components, reducing hardware and wiring requirements.

Sinamics s120 booksize format offers a full control menu:

  • V/Hz
  • Vector
  • Servo
  • Single axis to multi Axis Control using SIMOTION Control Modules
  • Precision CNC machining using SINUMERIK CNC Control Modules

Other modules in the booksize format include

  • Control Supply Modules (Active Line Modules)
  • Braking Module (Smart line Modules)
  • and Motor Modules (MoMo)
  • Continuous Rating Motor Modules (C Modules)
  • Discontinuous Rating Motor Modules (D Modules)

The Primary Components of the S120 SINAMICS Sytem

There are three components which make up the backbone of the SIMANICS S120 system,

  • The Control Unit - which acts as the brain.
  • The Line Module - which converts 3 Phase AC to the DC Bus
  • The Motor Module Inverter(s) - which supply power to the motors

An advantage of SINAMICS S120 is it's ability to self configure, via the Drive CLiQ system, which uses a real time Ethernet layer.  The S120 Control unit reads the electronic name plates and data from the modules and configures itself, reducing programming errors.

Motors with Drive CLiQ send name plate data and encoder feedback over the same cable, if the motor has a Drive CLiQ encoder you can simply connect it to it's motor module.  If the motor does not have Drive CLiQ, encoder feedback is typically sent via an SMC Module and then brought into the S120

Additional modules such as Failsafe I/O and Pulse Emulation are available and can be added via Drive CLiQ.

Motor Power connections are made at the base of the motor modules, and the DC bus is connected at the top of the module behind the covers.

The Control Unit uses a compact flash card to house parameters, firmware and licenses, which enables quick and easy replacement of control units by transferring the compact flash card.  A basic operator panel can also be mounted on the control  unit.

A SIMOTION D Control Unit is used for applications requiring coordinated motion control such as synchronous operation, electronic gear, cam disk or complex technology functions.
SIMOTION D Control Units are available in a range of performance variants:

• A SIMOTION D425 Control Unit can control up to 16 axes,
• A SIMOTION D435 Control Unit can control up to 32 axes,
• A SIMOTION D445 Control Unit can control up to 64 axes.

S120 Line Modules

Basic Line Modules

Basic Line Modules are designed only for infeed operation, i.e. they are not capable of recovering regenerative energy to the supply system. If regenerative energy is produced, e.g. when
drives brake, it must be converted to heat by means of a Braking Module and a braking resistor. When a Basic Line Module is used as the infeed, the matching line reactor must be installed.
A line filter can be installed optionally to restrict conducted interference to Class C2 limits (EN 61800-3).

Smart Line Modules

Smart Line Modules can supply energy and return regenerative energy to the supply system. A Braking Module and braking resistor are required only if the drives need to be decelerated in a controlled manner after a power failure (i.e. when energy cannot be recovered to the supply). When a Smart Line Module is used as the infeed, the matching line reactor must be installed. A line filter can be installed optionally to restrict conducted interference to Class C2 limits (EN 61800-3).

Active Line Modules

Active Line Modules can supply energy and return regenerative energy to the supply system. A Braking Module and braking resistor are required only if the drives need to be decelerated in a controlled manner after a power failure (i.e. when energy cannot be recovered to the supply). In contrast to Basic Line Modules and Smart Line Modules, however, Active Line Modules generate a regulated DC voltage which remains constant despite fluctuations in the line voltage. In this case, the line voltage must remain within the permissible tolerance range. Active Line Modules draw a virtually sinusoidal current from the supply which limits any harmful harmonics.

• Active Line Modules in booksize format
When an Active Line Module is used as the infeed, the matching line reactor must be installed. To minimize interference emission, the Active Line Module should always be operated with a combination of line filter and line reactor

S120 Cooling Options

Internal air cooling

In this standard solution, the power loss from the electronics and power units of the drive components is removed by natural cooling or by a forced-ventilation system and routed to the interior of the control cabinet.

External air cooling

External air cooling uses the "through-hole" method. The components’ power unit heat sinks pass through the mounting surface in the control cabinet and can thus release the heat losses of the power circuit to a separate external cooling circuit. The only heat loss that remains in the cabinet is emitted by the electronics. Degree of protection IP54 can be achieved at this "mechanical interface". The heat sink, with its cooling fins and the fan unit (part of the scope of supply), protrudes through the back into a separate ventilation area, which can also open outwards.

Cold-plate cooling

Units designed with cold-plate cooling can pass the power unit heat losses to an external heat sink via a thermal interface on the unit’s rear panel. This external heat sink is water-cooled, for example.
